Our Pillars

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Initiative

Menstrual hygiene management

We believe in changing the way menstruation is perceived, especially in rural areas where period poverty is rampant.

In most Kenyan rural communities, young girls and women  have a poor understanding of MHM since this is an issue that’s normally shrouded in silence.

It immensely impacts girls’ health, education and livelihoods ( limited adolescent youth friendly health services coupled with poor / lack of MHM education leads to high numbers of school dropouts by teenage girls). Besides equipping them with knowledge on managing their periods, we burst myths and misinformation surrounding menstruation.

We also assist school going and out-of school girls with sanitary pads and dignity kits alongside MHM training. The sanitary kits support lasts them 3 menstrual cycles and thus ensuring that girls stay in school a whole term.

Youth Empowerment Hub

Digital technologies continue to evolve; the internet has provided adolescents with numerous benefits, including increased social support, academic enrichment and worldwide cross-cultural interaction.

But the rural youth has been left behind. The Young Empowerment Hub is co-owned with a like minded organization (Nascent Prospects) and is an online platform geared towards creating a movement of technology-enabled rural girls into a safe space to discuss topics that affect their daily lives ranging from menstrual health, to sexual reproductive health and civic participation.

Besides education and knowledge, we embed mentorship, leadership and intergenerational learnings towards enhancing wholesome growth for the youth. The platform is at its early stages and has a membership of over 150 girls.

Gender Based Violence

Gender based violence is a major source of inequality in Kenya today.

Due to cultural , social and religious norms, many women and girls  from marginalized communities have their rights infringed. There’s also a basic lack of understanding of their human / women rights.

They are thus subjected to physical, emotional, psychological as well as economic harm. At IIE, we educate girls and women on their  basic rights and advocate for their voice and protection. We also connect GBV victims to key service providers ( e.g. hospitals, police stations, pro bono lawyers etc) to start their healing journey.

Additionally, we engage them in entrepreneurship training or  enhance their existing skills towards financial independence and stability.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower grassroots women and girls to collectively engage the public and political spheres, starting with women’s practical economic needs and social norms at the village level, and building up to national agendas.
